Game-changing Tool
The COVID-19 has already caused chaos
on nearly every aspect of human life. It has impacted people from all walks of
life, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. Until herd immunity
is achieved, humanity will have to bear the consequences of this global
pandemic. The public's
trust in the COVID-19 vaccination program remains low, particularly in the
Philippines. Many people have suggested that the government, as well as
healthcare workers, should make every effort to educate the public about
vaccines. Rebuilding public trust, on the other hand, should be seen as a
personal responsibility as well as a government concern.
COVID-19 vaccines have been safely
administered to millions of people. All of the COVID-19 vaccines that have been
approved have been thoroughly tested and are still being monitored. COVID-19
vaccines, like all vaccines, undergo a multi-stage testing process that
includes large clinical trials involving tens of thousands of people. These
tests are specifically designed to uncover any potential safety issues.
Vaccines work by simulating an
infectious agent, such as viruses, bacteria, or other microbes that can cause
disease. This ‘trains' our immune system to respond quickly and effectively to
it. Vaccines have traditionally accomplished this by introducing a weakened
form of an infectious agent into our bodies, allowing our immune systems to
form a memory of it. Our immune system will be able to recognize it and fight
it before it causes us to become ill. Some of the COVID-19 vaccines have been
designed in this manner.
Vaccines approved by competent
national regulatory authorities are very safe despite the
fact that COVID-19 vaccines are being developed as quickly as possible, they
must undergo extensive testing in clinical trials to demonstrate that they meet
internationally agreed-upon safety and efficacy standards. As with all medicines, side effects
can occur after getting a vaccine. However, these are usually very minor and of
short duration, such as a sore arm or a mild fever. More serious side effects
are possible, but extremely rare. A person is far more likely to be seriously
harmed by a disease than by a vaccine. A vaccine can only be
validated by WHO and national regulatory agencies if it meets these
requirements.
Every year, vaccines save millions of lives. The development of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines is a major step forward in our global effort to end the pandemic. Safe and effective vaccines are a game-changing tool, but we must continue to wear masks, wash our hands, ensure good ventilation indoors, and physically distance ourselves from crowds for the foreseeable future.
