Powerful Women

As March draws to a close, we approach the end of Women's History Month, a month dedicated in some parts of the world to honoring and commemorating the contributions of women throughout history.

March 1 marks the beginning of Women's History Month. The Women's Month Celebration in the Philippines has since served as a forum to celebrate women's accomplishments and to discuss on going and emerging women's empowerment and gender equality issues, concerns, challenges, and commitments. We also celebrate Women's History Month to remember the contributions of women to our culture and society over the years. It's an opportunity to reflect on the trailblazing women who have paved the way for change in fields ranging from science to politics.

Today's commemoration of Women's History Month serves a dual purpose. The first is, of course, to emphasize and make a concerted effort to remember and unearth women's contributions throughout history. The second is to remind us of the importance of being self-aware of how dominant narratives of a society's existence can, willingly or not, blanket other, equally important stories because they are deemed unimportant. It teaches us that the value of history is found not only in its facts, but also in its path and process, in knowing how events are likely to unfold. It holds us accountable to the less powerful groups in our society and draws attention to their lives and contributions, which are often overlooked.
